Omit Unnecessary Limitations
One cardinal rule of claim drafting is to omit unnecessary limitations. Every word in a claim is a limitation. The more words, the more a claim tends to be limiting. To that end every single word in a claim must be scrutinized. If the word is not absolutely necessary to avoid prior art, leave it out.
